Myth Meets Pub

I created the Dionysus Pub poster for the Stellar Poster Competition in 2021 to craft a visually captivating design with a pub theme that prominently showcased Dionysus, the Greek deity associated with wine and festivals.

My main goal was to develop a brand identity that captured the spirit of Dionysus and the celebratory mood of a modern pub. To achieve this, I explored a series of distinct Dionysus face variations, each interpreting the mythological figure through contemporary pub aesthetics.

The result: a bold, high-contrast poster that earned recognition as a Selected Stellar Finalist in the Advertising category—validating the strength of this creative direction.

The Challenge

Designing a poster that successfully embodied both the mythological gravitas of Dionysus and the vibrant, contemporary energy of a modern pub posed a unique creative challenge. One major difficulty was creating a visual identity that honored ancient Greek symbolism without appearing overly traditional or cliché. I needed to ensure that the character of Dionysus felt inviting and relevant for today’s audience, rather than distant or formal.

Another key challenge was balancing dramatic, attention-grabbing typography with the need for brand versatility and legibility across different scales and media. Through iterative experimentation with logo variations, composition, and a series of texture and color studies, I arrived at a layout that captured this balance—feeling both bold and sophisticated, playful yet rooted in historical motifs.

Ultimately, this problem-solving process shaped a brand style that not only stands out visually but also communicates the feeling of celebration, inclusivity, and mythic storytelling that define the Dionysus Pub concept.

Concept & Creative Direction

To create a captivating composition, I incorporated various elements such as vines, grapes, and wine-inspired motifs to reinforce the pub theme and association of Dionysus with wine and festivity. The combination of these elements was designed to create a visually appealing and cohesive design that captured the essence of both the pub atmosphere and the classical mythology surrounding the Greek god.

I successfully merged the spirit of Dionysus with the atmosphere of a modern pub through bold typography, a vibrant color palette, and well-composed central imagery that combines to create an engaging and visually striking design. This project earned the Selected Stella Finalist Award, validating the strength of my creative direction and execution.

Design Process

Defining the mood

My design process began by defining a dark, bold, and expressive mood that mirrors Dionysus himself. I researched ancient Greek symbolism and modern bar aesthetics, then fused these worlds into a cohesive visual direction.

Building the Visual Identity

I established a striking two-color visual system: deep charcoal black paired with vibrant turquoise-cyan, with bright lime green accents for botanical vitality. This high-contrast palette communicates both sophistication and celebration—the perfect duality for a mythological pub brand.

Crafting the Typography

The bold display typeface for "DIONYSUS PUB" commands attention with classical roots, ensuring legibility and impact at poster scale while evoking historical authority and establishing the brand's confident personality.

Designing the Icon System

I created a custom icon system featuring the striking Dionysus medallion at the top, rendered in turquoise with his bearded face adorned with intertwined vines. Supporting botanical elements—citrus slices, grape clusters, and decorative vine leaves—reinforce the pub theme and guide the viewer's eye through the composition.

Tools & Skills

I used Adobe Illustrator for precise botanical line work and layout, Adobe Photoshop for color studies and contrast refinement, and Adobe InDesign for format variations. The modular botanical elements allow adaptability for extended applications—from menus to labels to social media graphics.

The Success Behind the Myth

The Dionysus Pub poster succeeded because it solved a fundamental branding challenge that many businesses face: how to differentiate in a saturated market while maintaining authentic cultural roots.

By merging ancient Greek mythology with contemporary pub culture, the design creates a brand identity that feels simultaneously timeless and fresh—honoring tradition without being trapped by it. The high-contrast turquoise and black palette provides instant visual recognition, whether on a smartphone screen or a building facade, while the symmetrical botanical framework creates a modular design system that extends far beyond this single poster.

What makes this project particularly powerful is its emotional dexterity. It communicates celebration and sophistication, approachability and premium quality, local heritage and universal appeal—all at once. This isn’t just decorative design; it’s strategic brand architecture that gives a business owner a complete visual language. The Selected Stellar Finalist recognition validates this approach, proving that when you ground commercial design in meaningful storytelling and execute it with bold confidence, you create work that resonates with both design juries and real audiences.

The success lies not in choosing mythology as a theme, but in translating it into a living brand that modern patrons want to experience and share.
