Turning Ideas Into Art

Branding a Mythology

The idea for the poster “UNDER THE COVERS” stemmed from a desire to capture the essence of music and creativity in a visually compelling way. The concept was inspired by the notion of hidden treasures and the transformative power
of cover songs.

To structure the poster, I began by envisioning a design that would evoke a sense of mystery
and intrigue, much like the experience of discovering a new rendition of a familiar song.

The flowing fabric-like forms symbolize the fluidity and movement of music, while the integrated musical elements subtly hint at the
band’s identity and the essence of their performances.

The Challenge

One of the main challenges of this project was finding a way to visually represent the abstract concept of cover songs—something auditory and interpretive—through a static, visual medium. I needed to create an image that would resonate emotionally without relying on specific artists or lyrics.

Balancing the literal with the metaphorical was key: the fabric had to feel soft and inviting, while still structured enough to carry the motion of the musical notes. Ensuring that the musical elements flowed naturally across the folds, without appearing too chaotic or forced, also required careful compositional planning and multiple iterations.

The result had to strike a harmony between concept, aesthetics, and emotional tone.

The Concept & Creative Direction

The idea behind “Under the Covers” was born from the evocative metaphor of discovering musical gems beneath the surface. I wanted to express how cover songs often hold surprising emotional weight and artistic value—sometimes even surpassing the originals. The flowing fabric represents both literal bed covers and the metaphorical layers of interpretation in cover versions of songs. Musical notes dance across the folds, blending familiar melodies with fresh rhythm and harmony.

The poster design aims to pull the viewer in—visually and conceptually—by playing on dual meanings: what lies beneath the surface and the richness of reinterpretation in music.

Design Process

I began with brainstorming around visual metaphors tied to the phrase “under the covers.” The theme of hidden creativity, bedtime imagination, and music as comfort naturally emerged. The folds of fabric were digitally illustrated to resemble soft, flowing bedsheets in a gradient of warm and cool hues—symbolizing the range of emotions music can evoke.

I then integrated musical notation and symbols into the fabric design to imply that music isn’t just layered above, but woven into the fabric itself. Typography was chosen for balance—bold and commanding for “COVERS,” with a more subtle treatment for the upper text to guide the eye downward.

This project was an exploration of both visual storytelling and emotional resonance—capturing not just what we hear, but what we feel.

What Made It Sing

“Under the Covers” succeeded in fusing concept and design in a way that felt both fresh and emotionally engaging. The artwork captures a universal feeling: the intimacy of music, the comfort of reinterpretation, and the layered creativity behind every great cover.

Viewers responded strongly to the mood and metaphor, noting how the piece invites closer inspection and carries meaning beyond a simple music reference.
